Stunning Victorian mourning shawl or cape. Just dripping in jet beading. Lace trim, high neck, pretty swooped hem trimmed in black lace. Hooks and eyes all down the front. It used to be lined in silk but most of that is gone now. No label. Pretty much one size fits most I'd say. I absolutely adore this and have been holding on to it for quite a while. Please see condition below. I will be shipping this with insurance and great care so shipping may be a few dollars more than my usual.
Good to Fair vintage condition, especially given its age. As mentioned above it used to be lined in silk, but the silk is mostly gone now. Only tattered remnants are left round the edges. The collar is gently fraying along its edges and the silk that lined it is essentially just threads now. There used to be something on top of the stiff layer of collar that is still there, one can see the stitches left over, but its gone, so I'd suggest maybe one could stitch something new to it. The majority of the lace trim that bordered the edges is still there but there is an entire section on the right that's gone. There are some missing beads, though remarkably not that many considering, and there are a few areas in the mesh that the beads are sewn to that has some holes or worn areas. The hooks and eyes all seem to be accounted for, but some of them need to be stitched on one side or other. I'd say its still wearable though EXTREMELY gently of course and only for very special occassions. But probably better as a pattern or study or part of a collection. That said, with some tlc and a new solid layer underneath it to stabilize it, one could probably get quite a bit of life out of this, but again...gently please. She's an elderly lady and should be treated with the respect due her.
Measurements when lying flat.
As this is so open and asymmetrical measurements are rather random and difficult to get. Its one size fits most I'd say. Please ask for anything specific you're wondering size wise, I'm happy to oblige.
Please note: These are vintage, preworn and/or preloved items. I do my utmost best to list any issues, but signs of wear should be expected, and there are occasionally small things I won't deem worthy of note. Please feel free to send me a missive with any questions. I'm truly happy to help in any way possible and I'm always up for a chat. Any accessories shown, including crinolines, are for display only, not included unless otherwise stated.
