This is a stunning dress from the 1930s in black velvet ( I believe silk velvet) by the incredible designer Kiviette--more on her below. The black on this is so deep it was very hard to photograph correctly, I've done my best. Snaps on the side. Pleats at either shoulder and shoulder pads. The sleeves on this are just incredible. Keyhole back. Short sleeves. Gorgeous fishtail in the back of the skirt. Matching velvet tie belt at the waist. About a small to medium I'd say.
Kivette was the design name for Yetta Schminski. She was a leading designer for Broadway from the late teens to the late 1940s. And for society ladies into the 50s. She designed for such stars as Fred Astaire and his sister, and Lee Merriweather. Her dresses are rare, much sought after and highly collectible. This extraordinary dress is certainly one of the most incredible pieces I've ever had the distinct pleasure to have in my shop. It will be shipped with full insurance.
Label reads: Kiviette, and there is a second label that declares this to be An original design registered by a member of Fashion Originators Guild. Now this was an organization in operation for most of the 30s meant to protect original designers from knock offs. So much incredible fashion history in this one garment.
Excellent vintage condition. It appears the seam up the middle of the bodice has been resewn at some point and I did spot a fingernail paring sized hole at the top of the side snaps.
Measurements when lying flat. Doubled at bust, waist and hip
Armpit to armpit across bust: 43"
Waist: 28"
Hips: 37"
Shoulder to waist: 16"
Shoulder to bottom hem: 58"
Please note: These are vintage, preworn and/or preloved items. I do my utmost best to list any issues, but signs of wear should be expected, and there are occasionally small things I won't deem worthy of note. Please feel free to send me a missive with any questions. I'm truly happy to help in any way possible and I'm always up for a chat. Any accessories shown, including crinolines, are for display only, not included unless otherwise stated.
